This invention permits to enhance the directivity or the bandwith of EBG antenna.
Principle
The invention is based on the fact that the use of a feed of which the surface of injection and\or reception presents a dimension (a width or a length or a diameter) superior to the operating wavelength (l) increases the directivity of antennas with material EBG.
For implementing the invention, the inventors have designed a feed comprising a flared electromagnetic waveguide (claim 3).
With regards to the anterior EBG antennas, this invention allows better performance characteristics:
=> Enhancement of the directivity keeping the same bandwith
=> Enhancement of bandwith keeping same the directivity
=> Enhancement of the gain
=> Possibility to select the appropriate propagation mode
=> Improvement of the radiation pattern (low side lobs (-35dB), very good main lobe shape)
and the EBG antenna’s benefits as reduced size and good gain.
Antenna useful for:
=> Spatial application: antenna for satellite communication (telephony, TV)
=> Terrestrial application: antenna for LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service)
=> High power microwaves applications
